Health Policy Action Plan to Improve Quality of Health Care Delivery for Diverse Populations
Overview
Differences in socioeconomic status, whether measured by income, educational achievement, or occupation, are associated with large disparities in health status. This association persists across the life cycle and across measures of health, including health status, morbidity, and mortality. Although effects are largest for those living in poverty, gradients of disparity are seen across the socioeconomic spectrum.
There is an interrelationship of race, socioeconomic status, and health with respect to what are the causes and what potential solutions can be found in terms of health policy that may mitigate these relationships.
Genomic science is propelling an unprecedented rate of discovery of new insights into the relationship between human genetic variation and health. Understanding the role genomics plays in the health of individuals, families, and communities enables health professionals and clinicians to better advise patients, program planners, and policymakers in the best use of the rapidly developing field. By identifying genetic factors that contribute to individual and group variation in disease risk, this knowledge may be translated into actions and practice.
The goal of this assignment/paper is to come away with a better understanding of the complex patterns and relationships between socioeconomic status and health as well as tying in genomic science. Socioeconomic status is the potential or realized access to resources in three major domains: material, human, and social capitalâso, increasing material wealth may not solve the complex socioeconomic relationships that create the health disparities. Steer away from simple solutions such as eliminating poverty by throwing more money at the problem.
