You will find a list of monuments or sites of historical significance in New York, New Jersey and
Pennsylvania in the Assignments box under the Resources tab of the Sakai site. Choose one of these
places and write a 5-6-page essay in which you explore the relationship between the site, the moment or
person commemorated, the moment of monumentalization (that is, when the memorial, etc., was
constructed or reconstructed), its evolution, and our current understanding of its interpretation. The
emphasis of the essay should not be on what is remembered, but on how and why it is remembered in this
way.
