Hospital Economics and Hospital Management (HEN 433) Problem Solving Project

The patient was booked for knee replacement surgery. She was admitted 5 days ahead of time for elective investigations to be done on an inpatient basis, instead of as an outpatient. She had smooth surgery by the orthopedic surgeon and stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks after surgery to get physiotherapy (which can be done as an outpatient). Her total length of stay was 3 weeks, while the average Length of Stay (ALOS) for such a procedure is typically 5 days only. Other patients are denied admission because of no available beds affected by such practices.
