Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature
In Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature (Book 1, Section 4, “On Personal Identity”) Hume argues that we have no idea of our self. In Descartes’s Second Meditation, Descartes seems to argue that we have indubitable knowledge of ourselves. In this essay, use passages from these two works to clarify and explain how exactly these two philosophers disagree. Further, use philosophical analysis to explain which philosopher you think is right.
Some possible points to consider:
Does Hume misunderstand Descartes, or is there a real disagreement between their two positions?
Can Descartes successfully defend himself from Hume’s critique? Or must Hume modify his own account?
