Description

Aim: To identify, assess/analyze, and evaluate a central claim or argument contained in the film.

-A close reading of a text moves beyond summary to include not only an assessment of an explicit argument presented in the text, but also an analysis of the implicit or coded arguments that may be found within the writing (for ex. director/author bias, inherent assumptions, cultural metaphors and references). It should also identify and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the narrative/theme/text..

There are many different approaches you can take that include, but are not limited to:
• Identifying binary oppositions in the argument;
• Identifying casual claims;
• Identifying implicit or explicit bias;
• Assessing the underlying political ideology of the author;
• Assessing the logic and reasoning being used to make the argument;

Your essay should include the following components:
1) Identify: a particular claim or strain of the argument to analyze more closely;

2) Analyze: break into composite parts, dissect the underlying logic, and relate these elements to the larger structure;

3) Evaluate: make reasoned, textually substantiated judgments about it. Note: Do not equate evaluation with opinion.
