Compare “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy to “Every Breath You Take” by the Police. As well, incorporate other versions of the song “Every Breath You Take.” For instance, Sting's version. By doing this, it shows how the same song is similar and different from each other. It’s not that the background information and such isn’t interesting, it’s just not the focus of this assignment – if you have 6 pages of analysis AND you want to put in some of that in addition, that’s fine, it just shouldn’t be taking the place of musical analysis. You’re clearly capable of musical analysis so if you definitely want to focus on this song/pair of songs, then the way to make sure you have enough is to have a bunch of versions of “Every Breath You Take” (and you can always add to that list if you’re running short). Adding too much of the other stuff (biography, history, backstory, etc.) won’t help given that you’re being evaluated on how you dig into the recordings and not just on a page count.
