  1. Information system as we learned is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data. It is also used to provide information, knowledge, and digital products. While many people think IS refers to computer-based system, it’s actual a general term that includes “systems, people and processes designed to create, store, manipulate, distribute, and disseminate information.” For example, in my country, not everyone can afford a computer so in order to keep track of their business (typically running a small convenient store), they use a pen and a notebook to create and store information on their transactions, which can be further be manipulated later when needed.

Information Technology, on the other hand, is a different version, particularly a subset of Information System. It is defined as “the study, design, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems.” IT deals with using hardware and software to govern the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of digitized data when the amount of data becomes too large for human brain to handle effectively and accurately. For example, database servers, external and internal drives, the software that are used to access the stored information.

  1. Information systems would be programs, individuals, and procedures that allow for data to be formed, edited, stored, and easily deliverable to others. This system can also be formed without the use of technology as the means to form, edit, store and send other people data. This type of system does not have to be complicated and can be as simple as having a manual system where there are only people physically writing down information. An example of this would be passing a note to a coworker with data and then your coworker giving it back with changes made to it.
  2. Per the reading assignment, IS is a “term for the systems, people, and processes designed to create, store, manipulate, distribute, and disseminate information”. Information systems can be broken down into three major types, Management Support, Support of Knowledge Work, and Operational Support. Management Support Systems include executive information systems, decision support systems, and management reporting systems. Support of Knowledge Work systems include Profession support systems, collaboration systems, Knowledge management systems. Lastly, Operational Support systems include Supply Chain Management, Customer relationship management, and Transaction processing systems. Some of the main benefits of IS are real time data, better communication, reduced risk of errors, greater productivity, and one secure location.

IT, or Information Technology, is a sub sector of information systems focusing on the technology involved in the systems themselves such as hardware, software, databases, and networks. According to the reading, IT “often governs the acquisition, processing, storage, and dissemination of digitized information, or data, generated through the disciplines of computing and telecommunications”. Examples of career paths in IT include cyber-security, database administration, infrastructure management, business intelligence, or enterprise resource planning. The field of cyber security is interesting to me and growing quite rapidly with the newfound political focus on regulating how companies can store, use, and disseminate consumer data.
