Dante Alighieri played a critical role in the literature world through his poem Divine Comedy that was written in the 14th century. The poem contains Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. The Inferno is a description of the nine circles of torment that are found on the earth. It depicts the realms of the people that have gone against the spiritual values and who, instead, have chosen bestial appetite, violence, or fraud and malice. The nine circles of hell are limbo, lust, gluttony, greed and wrath. Others are heresy, violence, fraud, and treachery. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Dante’s Inferno in the perspective of its portrayal of God’s image and the justification of hell.

In this epic poem, God is portrayed as a super being guilty of multiple weaknesses including being egotistic, unjust, and hypocritical. Dante, in this poem, depicts God as being more human than divine by challenging God’s omnipotence. Additionally, the manner in which Dante describes Hell is in full contradiction to the morals of God as written in the Bible. When god arranges Hell to flatter Himself, He commits egotism, a sin that is common among human beings (Cheney, 2016). The weakness is depicted in Limbo and on the Gate of Hell where, for instance, God sends those who do not worship Him to Hell. This implies that failure to worship Him is a sin.

God is also depicted as lacking justice in His actions thus removing the godly image. The injustice is portrayed by the manner in which the sodomites and opportunists are treated. The opportunists are subjected to banner chasing in their lives after death followed by being stung by insects and maggots. They are known to having done neither good nor bad during their lifetimes and, therefore, justice could have demanded that they be granted a neutral punishment having lived a neutral life. The sodomites are also punished unfairly by God when Brunetto Lattini is condemned to hell despite being a good leader (Babor, T. F., McGovern, T., & Robaina, K. (2017). While he commited sodomy, God chooses to ignore all the other good deeds that Brunetto did.

Finally, God is also portrayed as being hypocritical in His actions, a sin that further diminishes His godliness and makes Him more human. A case in point is when God condemns the sin of egotism and goes ahead to commit it repeatedly. Proverbs 29:23 states that “arrogance will bring your downfall, but if you are humble, you will be respected.” When Slattery condemns Dante’s human state as being weak, doubtful, and limited, he is proving God’s hypocrisy because He is also human (Verdicchio, 2015). The actions of God in Hell as portrayed by Dante are inconsistent with the Biblical literature. Both Dante and God are prone to making mistakes, something common among human beings thus making God more human.

To wrap it up, Dante portrays God is more human since He commits the same sins that humans commit: egotism, hypocrisy, and injustice. Hell is justified as being a destination for victims of the mistakes committed by God. The Hell is presented as being a totally different place as compared to what is written about it in the Bible. As a result, reading through the text gives an image of God who is prone to the very mistakes common to humans thus ripping Him off His lofty status of divine and, instead, making Him a mere human. Whether or not Dante did it intentionally is subject to debate but one thing is clear in the poem: the misconstrued notion of God is revealed to future generations.

Self-Reflection on Interpersonal Behavioral Competencies

This self-reflection analyzes my strengths, weaknesses, and strategies for development in the three interpersonal behavioral competencies identified by SHRM: Relationship Management, Communication, and Global Mindset.

Strengths:

  • Communication: I consider communication a significant strength. I’ve consistently received positive feedback on my ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. For example, in previous group projects, I was often tasked with synthesizing information from various sources and presenting it to the larger group, a role I enjoyed and excelled at. I’m also comfortable adapting my communication style to different audiences, whether it’s explaining technical concepts to a non-technical audience or engaging in a professional discussion with subject matter experts. Furthermore, I actively listen, ask clarifying questions, and seek feedback to ensure effective communication. My ability to write clearly and persuasively, as demonstrated in my academic work and professional

  • correspondence, further supports this self-assessment. Finally, I am aware of the importance of non-verbal communication and strive to maintain appropriate eye contact, body language, and tone.

  • Relationship Management: I believe I possess strong relationship management skills. I genuinely enjoy building connections with people and prioritize maintaining positive relationships. In my volunteer work, I successfully fostered collaborative relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, working together to achieve common goals. I actively practice empathy, trying to understand others’ perspectives and needs. I am also comfortable navigating conflict constructively, seeking mutually agreeable solutions. For instance, when disagreements arose within a team, I facilitated discussions to ensure everyone felt heard and helped the team find a compromise. I am also mindful of the importance of recognizing and appreciating the contributions of others, expressing gratitude and acknowledging their efforts.

Weaknesses:

  • Global Mindset: While I am intellectually curious about different cultures and enjoy learning about global issues, I recognize that my direct experience with diverse cultures is limited. My exposure has primarily been through books, articles, and online resources. While I understand the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness, I haven’t had extensive opportunities to interact with people from vastly different cultural backgrounds in professional or personal settings. For example, although I have studied different cultural communication styles, I have not yet had to navigate a complex cross-cultural negotiation in a real-world scenario. This lack of practical experience is my primary weakness in this area. I can sometimes make assumptions based on limited knowledge, which could lead to misunderstandings.

Strategies for Development:

  • Global Mindset: I am actively pursuing several strategies to develop my global mindset:

    • Immersion: I am exploring opportunities for international travel or exchange programs to gain firsthand experience with different cultures.
    • Cross-cultural training: I plan to enroll in courses or workshops focused on developing cross-cultural communication and awareness skills.
    • Language learning: I am learning a new language to enhance my ability to communicate with and understand people from other cultures.
    • Cultural exchange: I will seek opportunities to interact with people from diverse backgrounds in my community, such as volunteering with organizations that serve immigrant populations.
    • Continuous learning: I will make a conscious effort to stay informed about global events, cultural trends, and diverse perspectives through reading, podcasts, and online resources. I will specifically seek out materials written from diverse viewpoints to challenge my own assumptions.
  • Relationship Management: While I consider this a strength, I am committed to continuous improvement:

    • Networking: I will actively participate in professional networking events to expand my network and build relationships with people in my field.
    • Mentorship: I will seek out mentorship opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and further refine my relationship management skills.
    • Feedback: I will regularly seek feedback from colleagues and supervisors on my interpersonal skills and actively work on any identified areas for improvement.
  • Communication: While already a strength, I will further develop this competence:

    • Public speaking: I will seek opportunities to practice public speaking, such as joining a Toastmasters club, to enhance my presentation skills and confidence.
    • Written communication: I will continue to hone my writing skills through practice and feedback, focusing on clarity, conciseness, and persuasiveness.
    • Active listening: I will continue to practice active listening techniques, such as paraphrasing and summarizing, to ensure I fully understand others’ perspectives. I will also focus on minimizing distractions when engaging in conversations.

By focusing on these strategies, I am confident in my ability to further develop my interpersonal behavioral competencies and become a more effective and well-rounded professional.
