In the novel Invisible Man, the protagonist struggles to survive in New York City in the 1920s, but the novel was published in 1952. For your semester project, you are going to write a 12-15 page paper that explores rebellion and revolution as they relate to Ralph Ellison, the author, and what he presents in IM. It’s up to you how you want to approach this. The question to answer is: What is his role in society? how does society view him? how is the title of the novel related to this? Your paper must include primary and secondary research. Your primary research should include Ellison’s essays on the novel, interviews, maybe letters he wrote about it. Your secondary research can include some biography but it must be relevant to the novel. You are beyond the stage of including birth information, etc in an academic essay. Your secondary sources should include some discussion of society at the time Ellison wrote the novel. You should have at least 4 secondary sources but the bulk of your paper should come from your own analysis of the novel and what you interpret from the other primary sources.
