Japan ranks fairly low in gender equality internationally, with a rank of 104 out of 142 nations. Still, schoolgirls have a high value culturally and ghost stories in Japan often feature wronged women getting revenge or haunting a place, a narrative that could be seen as critical of men’s actions towards women. Overall, do you think there can be a case made for a feminist reading of Japanese popular culture, or do you think there is a stronger case for Japanese popular culture representing the high levels of inequality measured by the survey? Why do you think this is? (I want to argue that Japanese popular culture is represenitive of the high levels of inequality).
