Description

If you blink, you’ll miss this supposed sighting of the New Jersey Devil in the video below. There’s no sound with it, just a flash of something and a claim that it may be the Jersey Devil or a prank. Or it may be something else. Critical thinking can certainly be of some help with this and should definitely weigh in on the claim. Because if good thinkers don’t, you can imagine what would come next with a video like this on social media. “Jersey Devil confirmed!” “Actual citing of the Jersey Devil caught on video!” We can all imagine the headlines. But would those headlines be true? That is what you need to determine in your assignment this week.
The first thing to do is view the video. You might even pause it at times to get a good look. Find at least two credible sources (this may be hard) about what the Jersey Devil is supposed to be, and then read the section in the chapter entitled “Making Weird Mistakes”. Use those mistaken ideas to see if the claims you have found about the Jersey Devil are actually misleading and fall into the trap of sloppy thinking. Then provide your considered point of view about the Jersey Devil.
This exercise has broader implications than the New Jersey Devil. What do you think of social media sites that routinely use this sort of material to entice viewers with questionable and sensationalist material? Yes, they are out to sell these materials to make money for themselves and advertisers, but what do they do to the average viewers who may not critically assess what they are shown? How gullible do you think the American public is and what can we do about it?
Create a Word document for your paper which should be double-spaced, 1 1/2 to 2 pages. Provide MLA citations for your sources, and then submit the paper above.
