The aim of the essay will be to analyze and critique the import of the articles within ethics and critical thought with regard to the MacKinnon/Fiala text. In other words, you'll want to explore questions such as: "What is the author's aim? What sort of argument does the author present? Is the argument indicative of a particular ethical theory? How does the MacKinnon/Fiala text present related subject matter?" Further, your essay will speculate upon the impact of that subject on the future of ethics and critical thinking as expressed by human beings. Learning Outcomes
Students will write a critical essay wherein they:
1. Identify key assumptions and implications of major moral theories and concepts, and define moral concepts.
2. Identify key assumptions and key arguments in the public debate surrounding contemporary moral issues.
3. Evaluate moral arguments in the public debate for coherence, consistency, and plausibility, using understanding of moral theories.
4. Construct moral arguments.
5. Reflect on the connection between moral perspectives and personal and civic responsibilities.
