The Baldrige evaluation process is extremely resource-intensive and time consuming. Organizations that pursue the Award must be committed to addressing issues uncovered during the evaluation. Based on your reading of the Lighter chapter and given your impressions from the videos and health system review answer the following questions:

  1. What do these three facilities have in common (what struck you about the three facilities), one being small, one being large and the other a four hospital health system?
  2. In one of the slides displayed in the Performance Excellence video, there was the suggestion that lean/six sigma, TQM, ISO 9000 are somehow “fads of the day,” but it touted Baldrige as reflecting “a fundamental orientation” and “a more systematic approach” to excellence. What do you think is the connection linking quality improvement techniques such as lean/six sigma with an undertaking such as Baldrige?
