Overall, Fovet et al (2020) discovered that among detainees there was a significantly higher rate of psychiatric diagnosis compared to those in the community-based control group. Specifically, they found that 36% of inmates had at least one psychiatric disorder on admission as opposed to only 16% in the general population sample. Additionally, they also reported that mood disorders were particularly common amongst detainees and accounted for nearly half (49%) of all psychiatric diagnoses made during admission screening.
The results presented by Fovet et al (2020) demonstrate how important it is for corrections facilities to prioritize mental health services within their system . Unfortunately however it appears there may be some disparities between what is available inside prisons and what is offered in communities outside which could explain why so many are entering jails with preexisting conditions . It is my hope however that through continued research we can eventually gain further understanding into these issues so we can develop more tailored interventions which will result in improved treatment outcomes for inmates needing assistance .
