On land, infantry remained at the forefront of most major battles as it was considered more reliable than cavalry or artillery due to its mobility. Infantry forces would conduct reconnaissance missions prior to engaging in combat with an enemy army in order to gain intelligence about their positions and prospective plans for attack or defense. On occasion these reconnaissance missions could be conducted using aircraft; however this wasn’t common until later in the war when planes started becoming increasingly prevalent on both sides.
Artillery was also used extensively during WWI although it took up much less space than regular infantry units since they could fire from afar without exposing themselves directly into enemy lines like other types of troops did. Artillery fire proved effective at keeping enemies away from strategic locations such as bridges or railroads but also caused mass casualties amongst troops located too close together when shells exploded near them.
The use of chemical weapons helped drastically shorten battles due to their indiscriminate nature – killing large numbers of soldiers regardless if they were friend or foe – thus leading many nations involved in WWI towards signing treaties banning further development or usage after hostilities ended . Additionally , naval operations involving submarines seeking destroy supply convoys & support vessels significantly raised stakes high seas despite presence protective fleets guarding same . Lastly , invention tanks allowed breakthroughs previously impenetrable defensive lines opening doors offensive actions never seen before war’s ending 1918 !
