Modernity is a juggernaut
According to Giddens, modernity is a juggernaut- an overwhelming force running over everything in its path. While people try to control it, they can’t contain or steer it. While modernity (the juggernaut) brings rewards, it also creates constant anxiety and poses an ever-present threat (for example- nuclear meltdowns, GMOs, climate change…). In addition, lack of control is intensified by space and time. Components of the modern juggernaut don’t need to be physically close to us to be a danger (nuclear weapons for example) and things created in the past can continue to affect us now. Things that are created now will continue to affect people way into the future. Moreover, continuous examination of big issues by average individuals reinforces their constant sense of uneasiness. So, we are in a period (high modernity) in which we are faced with great insecurity about life. (This is not improved by the fact that the experts we rely on can make things worse). Do you agree with Gidden’s concept of the juggernaut and that modernity leaves us with a constant sense of insecurity and risk?
