MSCIN Conducting a Needs Analysis

Catina Thomas MSCIN Program, Western Governors University D183: Designing Curriculum and Instruction I Dr. Michelle McCain July 2022     The purpose of this paper is to list a state standard from a lesson with the alphanumeric indicator code and the written standard which I have provided. I need to fluff the paper up a bit more adding more sentences using what I have provided please. The underlined sentences are my answers to the statements given. A1: State or National Standard: 1 state or national standard from the instructional unit is identified and the source of the standard, the alphanumeric indicator code, and the written standard are provided. Identify one state or national standard from the instructional unit, including the source of the standard, the alphanumeric code, and the written standard. The TEKS Subject Area or the Additional Standard Set §111.39. Algebra I, Adopted 2012 (One Credit). Subchapter C. High School Subject: Mathematics Course: A: Algebra I Section: A: Knowledge and Skills Strand: A: Mathematical process standards Knowledge and skills statement- A.1: The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to: A.1C: Selects tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate to solve problems. Skills needed for Mathematics for this grade band. A1a: Unpacking the Standard: All of the 3 given points are described and align to the standard identified in part A1. Describe each of the following to unpack the standard from part A1: • what students should know • what students should understand • what students should be able to do after completing the unit of study The students should know…… the difference in coins & bills and their value. They should be able to match coins and bills to their given price. The students should understand…… money has value and can be used to make a purchase for things wanted and needed. After completing this unit, the students should be able to…… accurately make a purchase with the correct dollar amount and be able to Apply knowledge of money skills to other real-world problem-solving situations and scenarios. A2: Evaluation Instrument: The description includes adequate detail to illustrate how the instrument evaluated students’ prior knowledge and skills. The instrument described or submitted aligns with the standard from part A1. Describe or submit the instrument you used to evaluate students’ prior knowledge and skills aligned with the standard from part A1. The instrument used to evaluate the students’ prior knowledge is called a benchmark assessment. Basic math and math problem skills are assessed. The knowledge of knowing coin/ bill identification and value is verified. And being able to calculate totals is assessed in math problem-solving skills. Also, instructional tools such as number journals, money packs, and number cards are used to review what the student knows for sure. Money packs are fake money kits used to demonstrate how money looks and its value of it. The number journals and number cards are used to reinforce the recognition of numbers. Analyze the data you collected after administering the instrument from part A2 and then use the results of the analysis to do the following: Describe the gap & Content or skill needed. A3a: Description of the Gap: The gap between where students currently are in their knowledge or skills and where they need to be to meet the standard in part A1 is plausible. The description accurately uses the results of the analysis to describe the gap. After analyzing the data from the evaluation tools here is what was discovered. The gap seems to be with most of the students getting the nickel and dime confused. They either recognize the coins but get confused about the value of the coin or the do not know the value of it at all. A3b: Content or Skill Needed: The description accurately uses the results of the analysis to describe the content or skills the students need in order to close the gap. The content or skills described are accurate and align with the standard in part A1. The results prove that more practice is needed to familiarize the student with the coins. Review the skill process of matching the coins and bills, counting them, and making a purchase. This is done by using money matching cards and money packs can be used to figure out which coins/bills to use for a purchase.
