Nelson Mandela was 71 years old when released from prison in 1990 after serving nearly 26 years of a life sentence for political activities against the apartheid regime. Trained as a lawyer, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1942 helping to establish its youth league and outlining a program of government opposition based on racial exclusivity. He later recanted this position, supporting a multi-ethnic struggle against oppression in South Africa. He was a world-renowned figure, and his jailing served as a testament to the unjustness of the apartheid system. International boycotts and attempts to ostracize the regime exerted pressure on the government. After his release, he immediately became president of the ANC and on behalf of the organization negotiated with the National Party an all-race election. Mandela won that election in 1994 and served as president of the country until 1999.
