We face problems every day! Problems can be big or small, simple, or complex, and easy or difficult. Regardless of the nature of the problems, we must learn how to solve problems effectively. Problem solving is a key skill and it can make a huge difference in your life. Problem solving skills contribute to your success as a student and as a future professional or a future husband, wife, or parent, etc. Confidence comes from having a good problem-solving process to use when you face a problem. With a good problem-solving process, you can quickly and effectively solve problems and have the best outcomes. But without one, you will do nothing and find yourself in a rut causing some very painful consequences. Write a personal narrative about a problem that you are facing right now. Use the four basic steps in problem-solving to discuss how you solved that problem. The problem can be study habits, money issues, juggling a job and school, homesickness, depression, peer pressure, partying, relationships (dealing with roommates, family, or friends), choosing a major, making a career decision, or any other problem that comes to mind. In this outline, you will pretend it is the year 202 and discuss the problem in retrospect. For example, “When I was a freshman in college, I had terrible study habits. I had a hard time adjusting to college life and staying on track. My grades suffered because of my terrible study habits.” Use this outline with the four basic steps as a guide to discuss the problem-solving process, how you generated, evaluated, and selected alternatives, and lastly, implemented solutions to your problem.
