Personality Psychology
Almost all personality research has been conducted in Western, English-speaking countries. What impact might this have on the resulting theories?
The theories that have resulted from this type of research are often incomplete or limited due to their lack of consideration for how cultures outside the Western world may view certain traits or behaviors. For example, agreeableness is viewed positively by most people living in Western societies while more collectivist cultures may view this trait more neutrally or even negatively depending on the context. By limiting our understanding to a single culture’s perspective, we limit our ability to accurately understand personalities globally since much variation exists between populations across various regions.
In order for personality research to become more comprehensive, researchers need access to diverse groups and must take into account cultural differences when conducting experiments and interpreting data. It is only through an open exchange with other cultures that we can truly begin to understand what constitutes a “normal” level of behavior or traits throughout various parts of the world instead relying solely on one culture’s determinations .
