Personality theories
• Select 2 different personality theories. One choice should be an existential or humanistic theory from this week’s assigned Feist et al. (2018) readings; the other choice of theory may be any theory that has been reviewed in class thus far.
• Apply and develop 2 conceptualizations of the case based on each of your chosen theories.
• Then, offer a personal critique of the theoretical frameworks.

Fictional Case of Erica
Erica is a white, 16-year-old girl who was referred to the clinic by the juvenile court after she was arrested for driving a car while intoxicated. Two weeks earlier, Erica had attended a party at her friend’s house. She consumed approximately six or seven alcoholic beverages and drove home. A police officer noticed Erica driving erratically, pulled her over, and determined that her blood alcohol content was .09. Erica was arrested. Her father made her spend the night in jail “to teach her a lesson.”
Erica began drinking alcohol, at parties and on weekends with friends, when she was 14 years old. She said that she hated beer but liked sweet drinks. “I mostly drink to relax and have fun with my friends,” Erica said. “They call me ‘Captain Cook’ because that’s the type of champagne I like to
drink. Drinking helps me unwind and have a good time.” Erica admitted to also using marijuana at parties and other social gatherings, but denied using other drugs. She noted that when she’s overwhelmed or stressed she sometimes gets together with friends to use alcohol or marijuana. “It just helps us to calm down,” she noted.
When asked what her relationship with her parents is like, Erica noted, “It’s fine. My parents are married. My mom’s a doctor and my dad’s an investment advisor, so they’re pretty busy. As long as I bring home good grades and stay out of trouble, they leave me alone. Now they’re on my case because of the arrest.” Erica noted that outside of work, her parents are often busy attending parties and other social events. Erica reported feeling as if her parents only cared about the arrest because “it could ruin their image.” Erica recalled that her parents have always been pretty busy, and she was cared for by a nanny most days during her childhood.
