The disease process I've chosen to discuss is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). It's a highly prevalent and complex chronic condition with significant implications for patient health and healthcare systems worldwide, making its management a cornerstone of advanced nursing practice.
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and/or impaired insulin secretion by the pancreatic beta cells, leading to chronic hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels). Unlike Type 1 Diabetes, where the body does not produce insulin, in T2DM, the body either doesn't use insulin effectively or eventually can't produce enough to compensate for the resistance.
