In “The Creativity of Everyday Moral Reasoning: Empathy, Disgust and Moral Persuasion, the authors argue that moral rationalism is not empirically supported. Emotions like empathy and disgust play an important role in formation of our moral views. Furthermore, they argue that the “guardians of moral order might be creative individuals. Using the text and examples (you may use examples we have discussed in class), explain their view. (Try to explain it clearly enough that someone who has not read the article would understand their argument.) In doing so, explain the role of the moral circle, and how creativity supposedly leads to its expansion and contraction. Finally, evaluate their position. Do they have a strong argument for their view? Why or why not? When evaluating their argument, think about challenges to your view and how those challenges might be overcome.
