For my specific region/area – Florida – the Board of Nursing is made up of seven members appointed by the Governor who are all registered nurses with varying backgrounds such as public health, administration, education. All board members must complete an application process including an interview before being considered for appointment. Members serve four year terms. One state regulation related to general nurse scope of practice is that RNs must be licensed in order to practice nursing legally. This regulation ensures that safe nursing care is provided through ensuring qualified practitioners with appropriate knowledge and skills are providing services to patients. It also promotes patient access to safe quality care which can help reduce healthcare costs overall. If a patient is from another culture it would be important for the nurse caring for them to be aware of any cultural differences associated with their diagnosis or treatment. They should also be aware if there any language barriers they need to overcome when providing instructions or explanations so that they can provide appropriate culturally sensitive care/education. Another state regulation related Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) is that certain APRNs have been granted full prescriptive authority in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act approved by each respective State’s Board Nursing. This allows APRNs more autonomy when treating patients thereby promoting better continuity care improved access cost effective healthcare delivery systems. . I am creating this PowerPoint presentation to discuss the differences between a board of nursing and a professional nurse association, as well as regulations related to general and advanced practice registered nurses. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is responsible for setting guidelines and standards for regulation by boards of nursing across the United States. The American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates on behalf of nurses and provides support in achieving career goals, establishing good working conditions, improving patient care, and promoting ethical practices within healthcare.
