Presentation of the Position Statement

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) asserts in its position statement that cultural and linguistic competence is a core requirement for professional nursing practice. The ICN maintains that:

Nurses must provide care that is respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices, and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse populations.

Healthcare organizations have a responsibility to provide the necessary resources, including qualified interpreters and culturally diverse staff, to facilitate effective communication.

Cultural competence is not a static endpoint but a continuous process of cultural humility, lifelong learning, and self-reflection.

2. Importance to Professional Nursing Practice
