The writing assignment for this course is to generate a “science communication” essay based on an assigned pair of articles. The essay should be modeled on the sort of news articles that are found in sources such as Time magazine, Scientific American, or The Atlantic (among other publication outlets). The goal of the essay is to describe the results of an area of research to a broad readership. The essay should convey a) why the research is of interest, b) what was done in the studies, c) what was found in the studies, and d) what it all means. The essay should also be written so that it is accessible to a broad audience. Readers should be able to understand the essay without having read the original articles, and without being an expert in the scientific domain that is explored in the original articles. There are several steps in this assignment:1 – Read the assigned articles (Huth et al., 2016; Hauk et al,. 2004). They are available in the course files, and you will be doing an “experiment analysis” assignment on each of them. 2 – You will prepare a draft of your essay for class on May 31. Bring the essay to class. There, you will gather with a few of your classmates and do a writing workshop (which will be done after the exam on that date). 3 – The first grade for the assignment is your participation in the writing workshop.
