Quantitative Methods
Using Statistical Analysis to Develop Insights
“The case of St. Jude Maternity Hospital” (file attached)
Objective
1. To demonstrate an understanding of the several engineering statistics techniques included in the module.
2. To provide evidence illustrating the application of these techniques by analysing data to gain better insight in a real problem.
Requirements
1. Read the case entitled “St. Jude Maternity Hospital” and answer the following questions (using statistical analysis).
Q1. Is there any significant difference in birth weights between male and female babies?
Q2. Is there a link between educational level of mother and educational level of father?
Q3. Are fathers generally older than mothers?
Q4. Is birth order a significant factor in the birth weight of babies?
Q5. Does smoking during pregnancy have an impact on the baby’s birth weight?
Q6. Is there a correlation between weight of baby and mother’s level of education?
Q7. Does weight of the baby depend on the mother’s smoking while pregnant and prenatal session attendance?
Q8. Do prenatal session attendance and mother education level lead to superior overall satisfaction in mothers.
2. General notes related to the statistical analysis:
a. You need to clearly state and check any assumptions you make.
b. Calculations can be done using any software or manually.
c. All calculations (done by software or manually should be placed in the appendix and cited in the work).
