Race and ethnic relation

For various reasons, anytime the issue of race and ethnic relation comes up, some students are quick to shutdown the discussion by saying "Oh, but that is in the past." Maybe so, but not in a sociology course. Just the same, in this assignment you are to look at the present--our immediate history making in say the last 20 years for your topic. Identify a social condition of a named social group in the Race and Ethnic Structure in the U.S. Explain why the social condition should be elevated to the status of a Social Problem. (See chapter 1 to refresh your memory) Drawing on at least 2 empirical supporting evidence of the sources of the human condition, explain why the social condition should be elevated the status of a Social Problem. Propose a policy solution to address the social problem, and how it would benefit the society.
Empirical evidence demonstrates that these conditions have been shaped by historical policies enacted by U.S governments such as Indian Removal Act from 1830s which led forced displacement from ancestral lands; The Dawes Act from 1887 which authorized allotment—the privatization of tribal lands; Termination Policy started during 1950s which aimed at ending federal recognition for some tribes leading eventually their dissolution ;and Relocation Policy between 1953-1980 which focused on relocating individuals off reservations into urban areas without providing adequate support for job training or housing resulting into an increase in poverty among those who moved away from their home communities(Battiste&Smith 2005). Additionally current national terrorist attacks against pipeline protests activities organized by Standing Rock Sioux Tribe among others reveal that systemic violence against indigenous people has not ended yet. In order to address this ongoing crisis immediate policy action needs to be taken so that native americans can be meaningfully included within our society instead being left behind. A multi faceted approach must be adopted including long term strategies addressing structural issues such as investing funds towards education , employment opportunities , healthcare , cultural preservation programs while ensuring legal rights protection . It would also necessary promote anti-bias trainings across all sectors with particular focus on criminal justice system .Finally public awareness campaigns need to be designed focusing particularly on youth development helping them become informed citizens actively engaged within their respective communities . In doing so we would secure both benefits for Native Americans allowing them equal access education opportunities jobs secure housing healthcare services etc but most importantly send out a message about values of non discrimination equity inclusion respect human dignity .

Sample Solution

The social condition of the Native American population in the United States should be elevated to the status of a social problem. This population is still heavily impacted by centuries of oppression, marginalization and discrimination due to forces such as colonization, racism, and economic exclusion. Native Americans are more likely than other racial groups to live in poverty and with significantly lower median incomes compared to White households (Choi et al., 2020). They also experience poorer health outcomes, higher rates of substance abuse, inadequate educational resources and services, disproportionate levels of violence toward Indigenous women (Campbell & Fournier-Steiner, 2019) , lack of access to financial capital and business loans (Gonzales-Vazquez et al., 2015), high infant mortality rates (Kersey et al., 2018), overrepresentation in prison systems (Green & Robinson-Cimpian 2017) as well as underrepresentation in political decision making institutions on local, state and national levels (Belcourt et al., 2017).
