Re-emergence of racial and ethnic tensions

  In recent months, there has been a re-emergence of racial and ethnic tensions within the United States. In this assignment, you (students) will select a news media discussion, newspaper article, or a social or political leader’s interview examine critically your perspectives on the topic discussed. You will reflect on your background and understanding of your values, struggles, and/or privileges. Through this exercise, you will begin to recognize the extent to which sociocultural and historical values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, create or enhance privilege and power. You will also gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and personal values in working with diverse groups. Finally, you will begin to explore the implications of cultural competency standards for professional social workers. Format: This assignment is between 4-6 pages maximum excluding the cover page and reference list (double spacing, Times New Roman, 12-font size, and adherence to American Psychological Association’s writing style [APA]).
