In this first reflection essay, students are to take a step back from the readings. Over the past two weeks, we have read creation myths from across many documented ancient civilizations. Our discussions of the readings have centered on archetypes and narrative structures as a means of beginning to understand how cultures sought to make sense of the divine and answer the question of where humanity came from. Why is it that so many cultures have creation stories? Are these stories always simply etiological or can modern humanists use them to learn something new about the cultures that produced these amazing and at times fantastical stories? Your essay should include discussion of James Weldon Johnson’s “The Creation.”
