Reflection offers you the opportunity to consider how your personal experiences and observations shape your
thinking and your acceptance of new ideas” (Academic Skills, 2014, p. 1). The purpose of this paper is to
facilitate your exploration of your own thoughts about socialization and the role of the family in the socialization
process.
Chapter 3 introduces gender socialization which some experts note can begin in utero (parents can talk to their
babies in utero verbally using gendered terminology, for example). For this paper, you want to discuss your
personal reflections of the topic: the family as an agent of socialization. You should respond to this question as
the overarching theme of the paper: How did your socialization experiences make you into the person you are
today? You should discuss what was it like growing up in your family and how has that shaped the person that
you have become. Think about whether gender was important related to the types of chores you may have
been assigned to or if curfew was different based on gender or possibly age. Was your family involved in
church or the community? If so, did it have an impact on you? Did you have regular contact with grandparents,
aunts, uncles, etc.? If so, what impact do you feel they may have had in your life? If you had a difficult
childhood, you certainly do not need to discuss it in any detail if you do not want to just focus on how it shaped
you into the person you are today.
