Men and women are often represented very differently on television, as are people from different social classes. The stereotypes we learn about “how to be a man” and “how to be a woman” are often false, but we see them over and over again on television. Similarly, we often also see very particular and limiting ideas about what it means to high class, middle class, working class or poor. In your paper, discuss the ways in which men and women and/or people from different social classes are represented in one of the following types of television shows:

• Soap Operas (Serial Dramas)

Pick one of these two types of television. How are the men and women represented differently; how are the people in different social classes represented differently? What, for example, kinds of jobs do they have; are they married or single; how do they dress, etc. How, for example, do they speak; do they express their emotion; do they have fun, etc? What do we learn about masculinity and femininity from these examples, and why is this important? What do we learn about class from these examples, and why is this important? discuss specific examples of Soap Operas or Reality Television or Variety Shows. Again, one or a few examples are enough. Choose examples that you are familiar with, and do research to find what scholars have written about representations of gender and class in media like television and film.
