Verses 1-5
Verses 6-11
Verses 12-16
Verses 17-24
Verses 25-29

Part 2

The books of the New Testament contain structural relationships which help guide the reader in interpreting the information being shared. To help prepare you determine the structural relationship in Romans 2, review the following example:

Example: Using the Mark 3:11-12:

Structural relationship: Contrast
Contrast: “the association of opposites whose differences the writer wishes to stress” (Bauer, 2011, p. 127). Be sure to cite the textbook.
Verses: 11 & 12
Clue Word: “but”
Material of relationship: Evil spirits crying out who Jesus is and the contrast is Jesus commands them to be quiet.
How this informs understanding of the text: Jesus did not want the evil spirits to proclaim who he was.
Question: Why didn’t Jesus want the evil spirits to tell who he was?

Using the same format as the example, address each of the following for Romans 2:

Identify at least 2 major structural relationships.
Specify the verse(s) in which the structural relationships are located.
Identify clue word(s).
Identify the material of the relationship.
How does this inform your understanding the text?
Provide 1 question the text raises for you.
What did the Bauer textbook say to assist you in identifying the structural relationships in Romans 2?

Part 3

Read page 135 (section: Locating Key Passages) in Bauer’s book. Locate at least 2 key verses in Romans 2. Explain why you think they are key passages and how Bauer’s material aided in locating the key passages.

Part 4

In studying scripture, it is important to identify non-routine terms for they give meaning to the text. Non-routine terms may be words that are difficult to understand, critical to the meaning of the passage though maybe not hard to understand, or words that express profound concepts.

From Mark 3:12, we have an example of a non-routine term and how it gives meaning to the text:

Non-routine Term: “commanded”.
“Commanded” is a word “commonly rendered, rebuke, in the New Testament. In classical Greek, its predominant sense is that of severe, strenuous reproach for unworthy deeds or acts” (Vincent, M., 1977. https://www.studylight.org/dictionaries/)
Informed Understanding: It appears there is anger in the command. There is something that made Jesus angry.

After reading the Bauer textbook, pages 163-164, you are to address the following (using the format above):

Identify at least 3 non-routine terms in Romans 2.
Provide definitions of the non-routine terms from a Bible dictionary, encyclopedia, or word study (do not use a standard dictionary).
Explain how understanding the term informs your understanding of the text.
What statement(s) from the Bauer textbook enabled you to identify non-routine terms in Romans 2?

Part 5

Give substantive answers to all parts of the following questions. Your answers should be at least 3 complete sentences each. Include the question with your answer. This document should be APA formatted in Times New Roman 12 font and double-spaced.

Trace carefully the thought of 2:1-16 and identify at least 3 main principles of judgment. State each principle in your own words. What erroneous concept is each principle meant to counteract?

Example: Principle: Those not qualified to judge. Error: Those guilty of the same thing.

Who is being addressed in these verses? What is Paul’s main emphasis, and why does his emphasis apply specifically to those being addressed?

In your own words, state the main 2 facts regarding circumcision in 2:25-29. Why do you think this is emphasized at this point?

After your analysis of Chapter 2 of Romans, explain:

What did the text mean to the biblical audience?
What are the differences between the biblical audience and us today?
What is the theological principle of the text?

Part 6

Using everything you learned about Romans 2 discussed in parts 1 through 5, write at least 250 words giving your interpretation of Romans, Chapter 2. Be sure to include how structural relationships and terms fit into your interpretation. Do not use any commentaries for this portion of the assignment. The interpretation is to be in your own words.

After reading pages 83-103 (sections: God’s Righteous Judgment and The Challenge to Jews) in Greathouse’s textbook, provide at least 1 example of each of the following:

Where you and the commentary agreed

Where you and the commentary said something different. Be specific. You said what? The commentary said something different on what page? Provide quotations and citations.

What is something new you learned from the commentary?
