Sentara Healthcare System operates in more than 300 sites of care, including 12 hospitals – seven in Hampton Roads (southeastern Virginia), one in Northern Virginia, two in the Blue Ridge region of Virginia, one in southern Virginia and one in North Carolina.
Choose a real HCO. Then analyze and describe that HCO by using Key Concepts from the HAD500 textbook. Your report must explain the HCO by using Key Concepts (KCs) that you study in the textbook and course – e.g., strategy, decentralization, size, culture, structure, task environment, niche, life cycle, coalition, and many others. For example, you might explain that your HCO uses a differentiation strategy. Or you might describe how your HCO is decentralized for marketing yet very centralized for financial matters. Your HCO analysis and report must correctly use 2 different Key Concepts (KCs) from each chapter that we study in weeks 1-7. Numerous KCs are identified (in blue letters) and explained throughout each chapter; all KCs in a chapter are listed at the end of that chapter.
Analyze and explain the HCO by using 2 Key Concepts from each of the 11 chapters studied in modules 1-7 (chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12). For each of your 22 KCs, first, start with a new section heading. Second, define the KC using the textbook and cite the textbook chapter number and page number(s). Third, use that KC to analyze, explain, and describe your HCO. In doing this, you might have to make judgments and inferences (just like managers do in their jobs). Here is a brief example.
• Organizational Environment
Sentara Health Care exists in an organizational environment, which is “everything that exists outside the boundary of the organization and has the potential to affect all or part of the organization” (Daft 2016, ch. 4, p. 142). The organizational environment of Sentara Health Care includes (but is not limited to) local zoning ordinances, customers’ preferences for evening appointments, new Medicare regulations, a new competitor, price increases by pharmaceutical companies, and high unemployment in the community.
