Helpful Lecture paragraph
According to Groupthink Theory by Janis (1972), some time-sensitive and stressful circumstances can lead
small groups to make poor decisions (Steg, Buunk, & Rothengatter, 2008). Poor decision-making is most likely
to occur when: (a) Group discussions are limited to only one or two alternatives; (b) Expert information is not
retrieved or used and initial decisions are given more weight even without merit; and (c) potential obstacles are
not considered or addressed at all. To combat groupthink, teams need to (1) encourage ingroup members to
challenge the dominant view and (2) conduct a second round of debate and discussion even after the first
round of agreement.
