Area of Interest Paper
- Introduction- In this section, you will provide an overview of the study of human sexuality and then identify the specific area of interest that will be addressed in the remaining sections of the paper.
- Area of Interest- In this section, you will identify the area of interest, and describe why this area has been chosen (for example, the topic may be chosen due to a current rise in the issue, lack of information in our culture, an area of divided opinions, personal interest, etc.) IF you choose to do a topic that you have encountered personally, do not share your story in this Area of Interest Paper and Resource List Assignment. You can say something like “this writer chose this topic out of personal interest or personal experience” and leave it at that.
- Description of the Area/Issue of Interest- Here you will describe/define the topic you are covering. Give a history of the topic, and why it is an important area of focus (is there a societal impact, family impact, individual impact, etc.) If it is a dysfunction, describe how it is assessed or symptoms that may be pertinent. What makes it problematic?
- Societal and Cultural Impact- What impact does this topic/area have on the broader community? What is the impact on individuals or families? What cultural issues are related to your topic? Are there cultural differences? What is the “cost” or negative impact of this issue if it is not adequately addressed or treated?
- Christian Worldview views of this topic- Consider the following to help format your responses to this section: What does Scripture or Christian teachings have to say about this topic, or is it even addressed in Scripture? What do Christian leaders or scholars have to say about the topic? What is God’s “heart” toward this issue?
- Clinical and Spiritual Responses- How is this area of interest approached in terms of clinical treatment? How is it assessed? What strategies are recommended? What is an appropriate spiritual response? How does the Church address this topic, if at all?
- Conclusion- Summarize what you covered and then make any comments or recommendations for further action either by yourself, the broader Church, and/or the counseling community.
- Appendix: Resource List Identify at least 10 resources specific to your area of interest. These resources can include books, online support resources, community support, treatment centers/programs, etc.
a. Organize your resource list by categories (for example: Books, Online Resources, Treatment Options, Community Support, etc.)
b. For each resource, list the name of the resource or title (Books should be in the same form as an APA style reference list), how to access the resource (URL, phone number, address) and a brief summary of the service or a brief summary of the book.
c. Books can be self-help and/or scholarly writings.
