Tele-health Technology for Patient Education
scenario:
You have been assigned as one member of a 3-4-member nursing IT team at the local community hospital. The hospital is in a rural area with the closest Tier-1 hospital (trauma center) three hours away. In the past four years, there has been a noticeable increase in the incidence rate of young adults with asthma “attacks.” The nursing unit managers have performed research on the issue and have determined that asthma patients readmitted within 30 days with asthma exacerbations occurred most noticeably during the winter months and on the weekends. Further investigation showed that additional potential factors to the asthma exacerbations appear to be brought on by the use of e-cigarette's and hookah smoking, and for patients with allergies.
The nursing managers have expressed a desire to incorporate Telehealth measures and phone applications as a means of educating the young adult populations on ways to control asthma outbreaks. The team has researched the literature and noted that Telehealth was introduced at other facilities with great success and helped to improve outcomes for patients with the signs and symptoms of asthma exacerbations. The nursing IT team will be required to create and present a PowerPoint presentation to nurse administration about the proposed plan.
Create a voiced-over PowerPoint presentation on using Telehealth technology and/or phone applications to educate patients and improve on the incidence and/or readmission rates of patients presenting with asthma exacerbations through the emergency room. The presentation should be approximately 15 minutes long.
The group presentation needs to include thorough answers to the following questions:
1. A summary of the key issues.
2. Discuss the implications the technology would have on health promotion (both positive and negative).
1. How will the use of the technology address the key issues?
3. Identify the proposed telehealth technology. Research real solutions or propose a solution for technology that may not yet exist.
4. Describe a minimum of 5 key tasks needed to implement the proposed technology based on the system life-cycle.
5. What concerns might patients express about using the described technology? What policies might the IT team propose to address these concerns?
6. Discuss the usefulness of the proposed Tele health technology to increase patient education and to monitor for patient readmissions.
7. How would training for the proposed solution be conducted for patients and nursing staff?
8. What are potential issues with developing and sustaining a tele-health program?
9. Conclusion

Slide 1: [Title Slide] Using Telehealth Technology and Phone Applications to Improve Asthma Exacerbations
Slide 2: [Introduction]
Welcome to our presentation on using Telehealth technology and phone applications to educate patients and improve the incidence and readmission rates of asthma exacerbations.
We are the nursing IT team assigned to this project, and our goal is to propose a comprehensive solution that incorporates technology to address the key issues.
Slide 3: [Summary of Key Issues]
In the past four years, there has been a noticeable increase in young adults with asthma attacks in our rural community hospital.
Asthma patients are readmitted within 30 days with exacerbations, primarily during winter months and on weekends.
Additional factors such as e-cigarette use, hookah smoking, and allergies contribute to asthma exacerbations.
Slide 4: [Implications on Health Promotion]
Positive implications: Telehealth technology allows for remote patient education, enabling patients to learn about asthma control strategies from the comfort of their homes.
Negative implications: Lack of access to technology or poor digital literacy could hinder some patients from benefiting fully. Privacy and security concerns should also be considered.
Slide 5: [Addressing the Key Issues]
The use of Telehealth technology will address the key issues by providing remote education and support to young adult patients with asthma.
Patients will receive personalized asthma management plans, access to educational resources, and real-time monitoring of symptoms.
Slide 6: [Proposed Telehealth Technology]
We propose implementing a mobile application that will serve as a comprehensive platform for asthma education and management.
The app will include features such as educational videos, interactive modules, symptom tracking, medication reminders, and access to healthcare professionals via video consultations.
Slide 7: [Key Tasks for Implementation]
Conduct a needs assessment and gather requirements from stakeholders.
Develop or procure the mobile application and ensure compatibility with various devices.
Integrate the app with existing electronic health record systems for seamless data exchange.
Train healthcare professionals in using the app and conducting video consultations.
Promote patient engagement and adoption of the app through targeted marketing campaigns.
Slide 8: [Patient Concerns and Proposed Policies]
Patients may express concerns about data privacy, security, and the reliability of Telehealth technology.
Proposed policies include strict data protection measures, secure data transmission protocols, and regular audits of the technology infrastructure.
Slide 9: [Usefulness of Telehealth Technology]
The proposed Telehealth technology will significantly increase patient education by providing accessible resources and personalized care plans.
Real-time monitoring of symptoms allows for early intervention, reducing the likelihood of readmissions and improving patient outcomes.
Slide 10: [Training for Patients and Nursing Staff]
Patients will receive training through user-friendly tutorials within the app itself.
Nursing staff will undergo comprehensive training sessions, including hands-on practice with the app’s features and conducting video consultations.
Slide 11: [Potential Issues with Telehealth Programs]
Developing Telehealth programs may face challenges such as initial setup costs, technological infrastructure requirements, and resistance to change from healthcare professionals.
Sustaining such programs may require ongoing investment in updates, maintenance, and continuous training.
Slide 12: [Conclusion]
In conclusion, incorporating Telehealth technology and phone applications into our healthcare system is a promising solution to improve asthma exacerbations.
By addressing key issues through remote education, personalized care plans, and real-time monitoring, we can enhance patient outcomes and reduce readmission rates.
