The difference between a Treaty and an Act.
1) Describe briefly the difference between a Treaty and an Act. Then select one Act and Treaty discussed in lectures or readings and explain the purpose of it and the effects, positive or negative, it had on Native Americans.
2) Describe, using specific examples, the ways in which the ecology/environment determined some of the pre-contact, cultural practices of 2 out of the following Native American groups we have covered so far: The Crow, The Cherokee, The Iroquois, The Netsilik or the Natchez. Be sure to think beyond just subsistence practices! Connect the environment to their culture.
3) Compare and contrast the Hopi and the Navajo of the Southwest, taking into account their subsistence methods, religion, homes and other traditional ways of life.
4) Shamanism was a traditional way of healing, but not the only way of healing, practiced by many Native American cultures we've looked at in this course. Choosing two of any of the cultures we've looked at, compare and contrast their traditional beliefs about sickness, death and healing.
5) Explain the article "Invisible Indians: Native Americans in PA" (on Canvas Week 3) in context of the Federal Governments influence on reshaping of Native American identity and the notion of race. Where is the conflict between traditional notions of Native American identity and Federal legal notions of Native American identity?
6) Compare and contrast the following two videos "Sacred Food: Wild Rice" and the video on the North Dakota Pipeline situation. What are the similarities and differences between the cultural and ecological issues at play in these two cases?
