The Enduring Impact of the Gettysburg Address: A Literary Argument
To prepare for this assignment, read Appendix A, âWriting Literary Arguments,â on page A-1 at the back of the book; or you can turn to one page after page 765. Read the âGettysburg Addressâ on page 736 of Practical Argument.
You have likely read the âGettysburg Addressâ before as a student. In this assignment, you will be taking a position about this literary work. You will provide support for your position using the four pillars of argument. This essay is not to be a literary analysis about the literary elements and devices in this short work of prose although you may reference its literary elements to support your position. This essay is not a response essay to what was written although it may contain your responses.
Rather, this essay is a literary argument in which you will choose several different pathways to establishing a position about this literary work. For example, you may consider comparing it to another literary work and how it is similar or dissimilar. Moreover, you may want to address the impact of this work and how it was received by various sources when Lincoln gave it. You may be surprised. Then again, you may want to discuss its impact today. You may want to compare the response it had at the time Lincoln gave it to todayâs response. However, regardless of the pathway you take to develop your essay, you must have a thesis that takes a stand and has an antithesis.
Finally, our current times are also divisive times. Abraham Lincoln faced divisive times and a threatening future for our country. Propose if President Lincoln's words can offer inspiration and support to our current critical times.
Before writing this argument essay, read Appendix A at the back of your textbook, Practical Argument. Appendix A does not have a page number continuous with the major portion of the book. Within this chapter you will read and learn the following:
What is a Literary Argument?
Starting an Argumentative Thesis
Choosing Evidence
Writing a Literary Argument
Read the literary arguments that follow in this chapter. Note their Works Cited page and in-text citations. Follow your grammar handbook's instruction for MLA style documentation. A Works Cited page with at least five sources from valid and reliable sources is required. Any quotes or references from other authors must be cited as an in-text citation, also called parenthetical citation as MLA style. Please follow my instructions for accessing peer reviewed resources in the EBSCO database. Your grammar book will show you how to format in-text citations and entries in a Works Cited page for an article from a database.
Remember that this paper is a researched argument paper. Your paper MUST have a thesis/claim. Your paper MUST support that thesis/claim with strong points and reasoned support, and you MUST also introduce at least one opposing view and provide a rebuttal. The Thesis Generator can be a good start in creating your argument's claim.
Again, a properly formatted Works Cited page and in-text citations are required. I MUST see at least five MLA formatted entries in the Works Cited page sourced from one or more of the databases from our Library webpage.
