General Information
In their essays, “The Meanings of a Word” and “Being a Chink”, Gloria Naylor and Christine Leong describe their personal experiences with race growing up in the United States. Although their essays are personal, they can be considered universal for many people like Naylor and Leong because they are describing life in a society that is not inclusive and not color blind.
Essay Topic:
Using Naylor’s and Leong’s essays and the posted videos, answer the following question in an essay of minimum 1500 words:
How important is the topic of race in the United States in 2019?
Explain your point of view with concrete cited examples from the readings, videos, and your own opinions [supported of course].
You may only use the 2 readings and 5 videos provided in this module. You may, however, refer to current events and news stories.
Instructions
Discuss this question in an essay of 1500 words. This word count does not include your name, etc. on the first page, nor the Works Cited page. It only includes the content of your essay.
Type your essay in MLA format. Review this in Module 1.
Provide 4 in-text citations of information from only the readings and videos provided in this module [no other sources allowed] in MLA format. This is explained in Module 5.
List your citations in MLA8 format on the last page of your essay in Works Cited.
The title Works Cited is centered and typed just like that. No quotation marks, no underlining, no bold.
Essay must be in MLA format. If it is not MLA format, it will not be read and will receive a score of 0.
Citation Formatting
Part of what this final exam is testing is your ability not only to discuss the topic but also to format in-text citations and Works Cited [citations] correctly. You must be resourceful and figure these out using the resources provided in this course, The Everyday Writer, and information provided in previous essay assignments.
You are being provided with some of the citation formatting.
The citations for the posted videos will all follow the pattern of an “Online Video Clip” [The Everyday Writer pg. 500 #56]:

All of the videos will follow the same pattern. They may have different publication dates, and of course different URLs, but everything else is the same.
When you cite from the videos, you will use the titles slightly abbreviated because they are long titles.
You will use the main key words from the titles and cut off the end in the parenthetical citations. For example:
