The preventability of unintentional injuries
We normally think of injuries as caused by uncontrollable, chance events. Did you? Since taking this class, have you changed your way of thinking about the preventability of unintentional injuries?
In your initial post, discuss how your awareness of the roles played by objects in our environment (for example, those found at home or work or in leisure settings) has changed with respect to being the cause of injuries. In other words, do you see these objects differently? Also, share your personal definition of injury intentionality, and give three scenarios in which environmental factors might contribute to unintentional injuries. Conclude your posting, with a situation or object that you would not have acknowledged as potentially hazardous prior to this course.
My personal definition of injury intentionality is when certain environmental factors can increase or decrease a person’s likelihood of experiencing an unintentional injury due to their presence or absence . For example, safety guards on machinery might reduce the chances of an individual being injured due to contact with moving parts while lack adequate lighting conditions may increase risk someone tripping over hidden obstacles.
Three scenarios where environmental factors could contribute to unintentionally injuries would be slippery floors which make walking hazardous, poorly maintained buildings that are structurally unsound thus increasing chance something collapsing unexpectedly leading potential for serious injury and not providing warning signs or barriers around dangerous areas such as excavations on building sites or swimming pools etc..
Before taking this course I definitely wouldn\'t have taken into account some seemingly harmless objects such as electrical outlets at home and how they can lead potentially fatal electric shocks if not handled appropriately by either adults children alike . Ultimately though, it is clear that many everyday activities & items represent dangers we often overlook unless made aware them ultimately highlighting importance for us all become more conscious potential risks present both indoors outdoors
