The Renaissance has been referred to as a “Golden Age” although it would be more appropriate to call it a movement, one that began first in Italy and eventually spread. As the ideas of the Renaissance were dispersed across Europe they changed. Thomas More’s Utopia is both a product of and a reaction to the Renaissance movement. While Utopia seems to embrace many of the values that were characteristic of the Renaissance, it likewise rejects some of the developments that occurred during this period. Discuss how More’s work both incorporates and spurns Renaissance ideals. Why do you think More writes this way?
