The Team Dynamics: A Personal Experience
All of us have been assigned on a team in order to solve a problem, perform an extra duty of some kind or to attend a special school with others. State which type of team you were on (project, work, matrix, parallel, etc.) and explain why it is that type. Think about a time when you were in this team situation and discuss the stages your team progressed through. Use either Bion's four possible pitfalls that need to be worked through in groups and teams or use the Tuckman model which outlines stages we move through during team change. Apply one of these models to your personal example and explain when each pitfall or stage occurred. Finally, discuss the positive or negative outcome of your team.
The Team Dynamics: A Personal Experience
Introduction
I was once part of a project team that was formed to develop a new software application for our organization. This team can be classified as a project team, as its purpose was to work collaboratively on a specific task with a defined goal and timeline. In this essay, I will discuss the stages our team progressed through using Bruce Tuckman's model of group development and explain the positive outcome we achieved.
Tuckman's Stages of Team Development
Bruce Tuckman's model proposes that teams progress through four stages of development: forming, storming, norming, and performing. These stages reflect the challenges and dynamics that teams typically experience during their lifespan.
Forming: At the forming stage, team members come together, get acquainted, and begin to understand the project's goals and objectives. During this stage, there is typically a sense of excitement and optimism.
In our team, the forming stage occurred when we were first introduced to each other and assigned our roles and responsibilities. We were enthusiastic about the project and eager to start working together.
Storming: The storming stage is characterized by conflicts and power struggles within the team as members begin to express their opinions and assert their ideas. This stage can be challenging as team members may have different perspectives and approaches.
In our team, the storming stage occurred when we started discussing and debating various aspects of the project. We had differing opinions on certain features and encountered conflicts regarding decision-making.
Norming: During the norming stage, team members start to resolve their conflicts and establish norms, rules, and procedures for effective collaboration. Trust begins to develop, and communication improves.
In our team, the norming stage occurred when we recognized the need for open communication and respectful dialogue. We established regular meetings, assigned roles based on individual strengths, and agreed upon decision-making processes.
Performing: The performing stage is characterized by high levels of productivity and efficiency. Team members work collaboratively towards achieving the project's goals, leveraging each other's strengths and expertise.
In our team, the performing stage occurred when we reached a point of cohesion and synergy. We effectively utilized our individual skills and worked together seamlessly to develop the software application. Our productivity increased, and we achieved significant milestones within the project timeline.
Positive Outcome
Despite the initial challenges and conflicts during the storming stage, our team successfully progressed through the stages of development and achieved a positive outcome. By addressing conflicts openly, setting clear norms for communication and decision-making, and leveraging each other's strengths, we were able to establish a high-performing team. The positive outcome was evident in the successful development and implementation of the software application within the designated timeline.
Conclusion
Being part of a project team provided me with valuable insights into team dynamics and the stages teams progress through during their development. Applying Tuckman's model, we experienced the forming, storming, norming, and performing stages. By recognizing the challenges during the storming stage and working towards establishing effective communication and collaboration norms, we were able to overcome obstacles and achieve a positive outcome. This experience highlighted the importance of open communication, trust-building, and leveraging individual strengths in order to create a high-functioning team that can successfully accomplish its goals.
