Police departments nationally are struggling to fill open positions for sworn officers, particularly with non-traditional police officer recruits that reflect the diversity of their communities, such as women, people of color, LGBTQ persons, and other minorities. TPD (Tucson Police Department) would like to understand how the agency can better recruit and retain a diverse group of sworn officers.
This project will explore the following questions:
What attracts people to police work?
What discourages people from becoming a police officer?
What can TPD do to emphasize positive aspects of police work? • What can TPD do to overcome discouraging factors? etc.
