The Use of Psychological Concepts in Popular Media: A Critical Analysis
Movies, television shows, books, news articles, and other popular media make use of psychological concepts and research to explain human behavior. For this discussion, identify a use of psychological terms, concepts, or research that you are familiar with from outside the classroom. Then, do the following:
Present a brief summary of how it presents psychological concepts and what part those play in the overall story of the piece (two to three sentences).
Using concepts and methods discussed in the readings, consider whether the piece uses psychology accurately. In other words, is the source you identified a good source of information about psychology? Why or why not?
Now, consider the topic you chose to focus on for your final project in this course. What psychological concepts or research you read about this week might help you understand your topic? Why?
Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates' posts, including at least one who answered the discussion option you didn't respond to.
Title: The Use of Psychological Concepts in Popular Media: A Critical Analysis
Popular media, including movies, television shows, and books, often incorporate psychological concepts and research to explain human behavior. One example that I am familiar with is the use of the "Stanford Prison Experiment" in the movie "The Experiment." The movie presents the psychological concept of the impact of authority and power dynamics on human behavior. It explores how these dynamics play a crucial role in the overall story, driving the characters' actions and interactions within the simulated prison environment.
Upon consideration, while "The Experiment" effectively presents the psychological concept of authority and power dynamics, it takes creative liberties that deviate from the actual Stanford Prison Experiment. The film exaggerates certain aspects for dramatic effect, which may not accurately represent the real psychological implications. Therefore, while the movie is engaging, it may not be a reliable source of information about psychology.
In relation to my final project topic on the effects of social media on mental health, the concept of social influence and its impact on behavior would be highly relevant. Understanding how social media platforms shape individuals' perceptions, emotions, and behaviors through social comparison and peer influence is crucial in comprehending the psychological mechanisms underlying its effects on mental health.
Guided Response:
Response to Classmate 1:
I agree with your analysis of "The Experiment." It's important to critically evaluate how popular media portrays psychological concepts. In my opinion, one aspect that could be considered for your final project is the influence of social media on self-esteem and body image. Concepts like social comparison and self-perception can provide valuable insights into understanding how social media affects individuals' body image perceptions.
Response to Classmate 2:
Your analysis of "Black Mirror" is intriguing. The show's exploration of technology and its impact on human behavior offers rich ground for examining psychological concepts. Considering your final project on addiction, concepts such as reinforcement and reward mechanisms in the brain could be particularly relevant in understanding how technology use can lead to addictive behaviors.
