The YMH Boston Vignette
Watch the YMH Boston Vignette 5 video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm3FLGxb2ZU and take notes; you will use this video as the basis for your Discussion post.
Based on the YMH Boston Vignette 5 video, post answers to the following questions:
What did the practitioner do well? In what areas can the practitioner improve?
At this point in the clinical interview, do you have any compelling concerns? If so, what are they?
What would be your next question, and why?
Then, address the following. Your answers to these prompts do not have to be tailored to the patient in the YMH Boston video.
Explain why a thorough psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent is important.
Describe two different symptom rating scales that would be appropriate to use during the psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent.
Describe two psychiatric treatment options for children and adolescents that may not be used when treating adults.
Explain the role parents/guardians play in assessment.
In terms of areas for improvement, one suggestion would be for him to focus a bit more on the nonverbal communication cues being given off by the patient; this could help him gain further insight into how the patient is feeling internally, even if they are not expressing it verbally. Additionally, he should be aware of any potential biases towards diagnoses which can occur due to gender/ethnicity as well as other factors such as socioeconomic status.
At this point in the clinical interview I do not have any compelling concerns because although we do not know enough about her mental health history yet; based on what has been discussed so far there does not seem to be any obvious signs of distress or danger associated with her current situation.
My next question would be “Do you feel like your emotions affect your daily life? If yes, how?” This question is important because it will allow me gain insight into how much emotion dysregulation is affecting her day-to-day activities and whether she needs extra support managing them accordingly.
A thorough psychiatric assessment of a child/adolescent is important because it helps practitioners accurately diagnose mental health issues early on so that appropriate treatments can be prescribed. It is also beneficial for identifying developmental delays or impactful environmental factors which may need attention alongside medical intervention in order for optimal functioning later on in life.
Two symptom rating scales that are often used during assessments include the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self Report (YSR). Both these tools assess different facets such as aggression levels, social withdrawal tendencies, anxiety levels etc which can then be cross referenced against DSM criteria helping clinicians making accurate diagnosis .< br >< br >Two treatment options specifically tailored towards children and adolescents include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) along Play Therapy depending upon age group . These methods are typically effective within younger age groups due its focus empowering individual using techniques designed encourage self reflection rather than prescription medications .< br >< br >Parents/guardians play an invaluable role during assessment process providing historical data surrounding child’s development informing giving direction initial stages evaluation . Regular feedback analysis results allows clinician make necessary adjustments plan accordingly while ensuring parent remains highly involved throughout treatment process whilst clarifying expectations discussing benefits drawbacks each decision taken together avoiding discrepancies between home school settings whenever possibleichever may be appropriate for my career goals), I am also looking to contribute to the medical field through research and publications. I plan to look into medical issues from a global perspective, delving deep into public health initiatives which seek to benefit low-income communities around the world. My ultimate goal is to have a positive impact on this planet as much as possible during my time here, and I believe that by focusing on medicine and healthcare, I can do just that.
Lastly, when it comes to special circumstances there are several relevant factors in my life which should be taken into account when considering scholarships or other financial aid opportunities. In particular, having come from an immigrant family with limited means has posed many challenges for me throughout my educational journey; from lack of resources to having very few support networks available at any given moment in time. Growing up in such conditions instilled within me a strong sense of determination and resilience; attributes which will no doubt go hand-in-hand with whatever future successes I may achieve professionally or academically.
