Apply theory to critically analyze variation in media systems round the world.
Context: Hallin & Mancini’s (2004) framework for comparing media systems focuses on the connections between media and politics, that is, between communication and government. Similarities and differences in media systems are ranked according to their markets, political parallelism, journalistic professionalism, and state intervention. The framework gives students the ability to compare any two media systems by investigating four key dimensions, and classifying them into one of the three models (i.e. Liberal, Democratic Corporatist, Polarized Pluralist). Currently, scholars are uncertain about the relevance of this framework for understanding non- Western media systems.
