Marriage and family therapist
Focus on the impact of similarities and differences between a marriage and family therapist and a family in the therapeutic process. Then, address the following questions:
a. In marriage and family therapy, what are the positive and negative aspects of working with clients of the same race, religious beliefs, SES, etc., or an individual of the same gender?
b. What would be the potential dangers and what would be the potential strengths of having similarities and differences?
c. How have you learned for yourself ways to recognize this impact and whether it is positive or negative?
d. What strategies would you use to remain aware of the impact similarities and differences are having in a therapeutic relationship?
e. How do the MFT professional ethics inform how you will work with clients who are similar or different from you?
The potential dangers of having similarities/differences in a therapeutic relationship include creating an environment where both parties are unable to see past their own perspectives due to unconscious biases based upon shared attributes. Conversely though there are also potential strengths associated too such as being able to more easily relate stories from our own experiences/backgrounds in order give examples when discussing certain topics which may resonate better than abstract ideas alone. Additionally, differences can also be beneficial by providing contrasting perspectives which can encourage further communication amongst everyone involved.
I’ve learned for myself ways to recognize this impact through taking the time during sessions for self-reflection about the conversations had before moving on - asking questions like “how did I approach this” or “what could be done differently” afterwards helps me become more conscious my actions so similar mistakes aren't repeated.
To remain aware of the impact similarities/differences have in a therapeutic relationship going forward I plan on using techniques such as active listening while incorporating elements like humor whenever appropriate as well - these strategies will help bring balance between us while allowing us maintain focus on client's needs without getting bogged down unnecessary details! Finally following professional ethics outlined by APA & AAMFT will ensure that any treatment provided remains unbiased no matter what similarities or differences exist between myself and those receiving care from me.
